A highly collected and sought after children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual, uncommon item in Burroughes' bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon. As such, fairly scarce, particularly in this grade. Horace Hedgehog,Sammy Squirrel and Prudence Pigeon were so pleased with the visits they had already paid to some of the Queer Birds in the zoo (see rja833019) they made up their minds not to stop until they had seen and talked with all the strange creatures in that wonderful place. The animals they visited included the porcupine, the Great Ant-Eater (pictured on front cover),the Giraffe, the Armadillo, the Rhinoceros and the Kangaroos and Wallabies. No.1 of The Queer Series of Little Zoo Books. Dorothy Mary L. Burroughes (b.1883,d. 1963.) Worked as Dorothy Burroughes, nickname Budge, which she used in her book dedications.Born in Westminster,London. Her father,James Burroughes, was the proprietor of Burroughes & Watts, Britain’s leading manufacturer of billiard tables and snooker accessories. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art,at Heatherley's School of Fine Art [The school was named after Thomas Heatherley who took over as the school's principal from James Mathews Leigh (when it was named "Leigh's"). Founded in 1845, the school is affectionately known as Heatherley's.It is one of the oldest independent art schools in London and is among the few art colleges in Britain today, that focuses on portraiture, figurative painting and sculpture.] and in Germany too.Worked as a commercial artist,a painter and poster and lino-cut artist as well as a highly regarded author/ illustrator of 20+ children's books, some of which she either authored and illustrated herself or illustrated for other authors. As a commercial artist, she had a commission from London Underground for a poster that promoted trips to the Zoo at Regents Park. That design design featured a group of Langur monkeys, drawn in a Japanese-woodcut inspired style which was to become synonymous with Burroughes’ later animal studies.A second commission followed in 1922,also for the Zoo. That design, known as ‘the monkey poster’,was even more popular than her first commission, and it became London Underground’s most requested poster. A solo exhibition, her first,in South Kensington in 1923 followed, and also met with acclaim and praise.Examples of her paintings from that exhibition began to appear in contemporary magazines such as 'The Sketch and the 'Illustrated London News'. Despite her success and her acclaim for her animal drawings, she felt it was heartbreaking and too painful.Nevertheless, her skill at capturing the character and dignity of animal subjects was widely admired and in 1925 she was made a Fellow of the Zoological Society in recognition of her talent.Elected RBA (1925).Her first solo book was 'Amazing Adventures of Little Brown Bear (1930).
